Allegra moodley

PhD student

University of Cape Town, South Africa

Supervisor: Dr Jonathan Ipser

Project: A longitudinal study investigating the neuroimaging and psychiatric effects of traumatic brain injury in a civilian cohort

My current research focuses on investigating neuroimaging biomarkers of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A major component of the work involves an ENIGMA consortium secondary analysis investigating white matter integrity in mild, moderate, and severe TBI. I will also be examining structural and diffusion imaging abnormalities of TBI and comorbid PTSD using both TBSS and probabilistic tractography.

Project: Neural and Neurochemical Correlates of Musical Emotion Perception: A Dynamic MRS and fMRI Study

My current research investigates the neurochemical and neural dynamics of music-evoked emotions using functional MR Spectroscopy (fMRS) and functional MR Imaging (fMRI). By utilising these advanced neuroimaging methods, I examine both neurochemical fluctuations and large-scale brain activity during naturalistic music listening. Bringing these measures together with real-time emotion tracking and advanced computational and statistical modelling, my work explores how internal mood states shape and transform our emotional responses to music.

Project: Dolphin brains are shaped differently

My current research consists of investigating how cetaceans' brains, especially deep diving ones, differ from terrestrial mammals. To do so, I rely on two pillars: a biophysical model of gyrification that predicts that only the elevated hydrostatic pressure, to which cetaceans are subjected to, will play a role in determining this difference; and high quality MRI that allow me to precisely reconstruct their brain surfaces and extract the physical measurements.

PhD student

Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile

Supervisor: Dr Marcelo E. Andia

My research comprises two main lines: a PhD thesis project that establishes a controlled human model of acute, focal brain lesions using HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) in Parkinson’s patients, offering a unique opportunity to investigate neuroplasticity and the mechanisms of brain network reorganization following targeted lesioning through advanced multimodal MRI. In parallel, I conduct a study characterizing former Latin American professional soccer players to identify early features of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). In both projects, I integrate ultrasensitive fluid biomarkers to complement neuroimaging. This combined approach aims to elucidate structural and functional brain alterations and their underlying mechanisms.

PhD student

University Of Port-Harcourt, Nigeria

Supervisor: Dr Wogu Eberechi

Over the past three years, I applied structural MRI morphometry to Nigerian cohorts, first comparing basal ganglia volumes and then characterizing thalamic‑nucleus asymmetries in Parkinson’s disease. My current work leverages Bayesian hierarchical models to profile regional brain volume and cortical thickness across five disorders (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, schizophrenia, stroke) against healthy controls. By borrowing statistical strength across groups, I generate robust trans‑diagnostic morphometric signatures despite low sample sizes. I aim to openly release a containerized processing pipeline and Nigerian‑specific normative models, creating the first open‑source morphometric resource tailored to African MRI data.
